The Airbus A400M Atlas is a European four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft designed by Airbus Defence and Space as a tactical airlifter with strategic capabilities, first flown in December 2009 and entering service in 2013. The German Air Force (Luftwaffe) operates a substantial A400M fleet as one of the type's founding launch customers, using the aircraft to replace aging Transall C-160 transports and support German military airlift requirements including humanitarian missions, paratroop operations, and NATO deployments across Europe and beyond.
Designed as a tactical/strategic airlifter replacement for the C-130 for several NATO countries, the A400M was first flown on December 11th, 2009. Like many Airbus commerical aircraft, the A400M features a full glass cockpit and a fly-by-wire control system with flight envelope protection. The airframe and wings make extensive use of composite materials while the engines turn high-efficiency eight-bladed scimitar propellers. Crewed by two pilots and one loadmaster, the A400M can be configured for cargo transport, troop transport, medical evacuation, aerial refuelling and electronic surveillance.
