Boeing 747-121, registered N656PA, was delivered to Pan American World Airways on June 18, 1971, and originally christened "Clipper Live Yankee" before later being renamed "Clipper Empress of the Seas." Under this later name, the aircraft was the target of the September 5, 1986, hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73 while parked on the ground at Karachi, Pakistan. Four gunmen linked to the Abu Nidal Organization stormed the aircraft; flight attendant Neerja Bhanot helped passengers escape and hid their passports to protect American nationals before being killed along with roughly 20 others when the terrorists opened fire during a power failure. Bhanot was posthumously awarded India's Ashoka Chakra. The undamaged aircraft continued flying for Pan Am and later Evergreen International Airlines before being scrapped in 2015.
Designed as a large capacity airliner and freight hauler, the 747 was first flown on February 9th, 1969. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
