The E-3B Sentry is an upgraded variant of the USAF's iconic AWACS aircraft, derived from the Boeing 707 airframe and equipped with the rotating radar dome that defines the platform. Entering service in the early 1980s, the E-3B introduced improved computers, enhanced radar processing, and better identification systems compared to the original E-3A. It provided long range air and surface surveillance, battle management, and command and control for joint and allied operations. The E-3B supported major missions from the Cold War through Desert Storm and later deployments, acting as an airborne command post that coordinated fighters, tankers, and strike aircraft.
Designed to meet a USAF requirement for an AWACS (Airborne Warning And Control System) aircraft, the E-3 was first flown on May 25th, 1976. The design uses the basic airframe of the commerical 707-320B and adds a 30 foot diameter rotating radar dome atop a pair of 11 foot tall struts. The radar system is capable of detecting and tracking low-flying targets at a range of 250 miles or mideium to high-altitude targets as far away as 400 miles. Onboard data-processing systems present Console operators with a wide range of information, enabling them to protect and guide friendly forces on the battlefield. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
