The Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) Kfir is a multirole fighter jet developed in the 1970s as a derivative of the Dassault Mirage 5. Unable to acquire French Mirage fighters after an arms embargo, Israel adapted the Mirage design to use the American General Electric J79 turbojet, the same engine powering the F-4 Phantom II. The Kfir featured improved avionics, enhanced payload capacity, and Israeli-designed systems, making it a capable ground-attack and air superiority aircraft. Entering service in 1975, it equipped several Israeli squadrons and later saw combat in Lebanon. The Kfir was also exported to countries like Colombia, Ecuador, and Sri Lanka.
Designed as a refinement of the Dassault Mirage III using the General Electric J79 engine from the F-4 Phantom, the Kfir was first flown on October 19th, 1970. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
