Often referred to as "Blackjack" or "Blackjack-A", the Tupolev TU 160 is one of the world's largest combat aircraft. The Russian long-range strategic penetration bomber and missile platform weighs 260,140 pounds empty and is approximately 180 feet long by 180 feet wide when wings are spread. The TU 160 reaches a maximum speed of 1,243 mph and can haul up to 36,000 pounds of armament. It possesses two internal weapon bays for storage of nuclear weapons, cruise missiles, and short-range attack missiles.
Designed as a heavy low-level penetration bomber, the Tu-160 was first flown in 1981. It is one of the largest and heaviest combat aircraft in the world with a top speed exceeding Mach 2 and a range of around 7,500 miles. The aircraft is designed for strategic bombing missions and is capable of penetrating sophisticated air defense systems and delivering a variety of weapons, including nuclear and conventional cruise missiles, free-fall bombs, and precision-guided munitions. Despite its Cold War origins, the Tu-160 remains a formidable strategic bomber and is a key component of Russia's long-range strategic bomber fleet. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
