VP-202, one of the first Mariner squadrons to see combat duty, gave the PBM a lengthy workout and found the aircraft to perform well time and again. Island-hopping throughout the Pacific, VP-202 (later VPB-202) flew PBM-3s on agonizing pie-shaped patrols which often lasted over 12 hours. Skippered by Commander Leeman, it was not long before VP-202 became known as "Leeman's Demons" in some circles. The Demons were pioneers in PBM overwater patrols of great length.
Designed to replace the Martin P3M and to supplement the Consolidated PBY Catalina, the PBM Mariner was first flown on February 18, 1939. This patrol bomber flying boat had a catilever designed gull wing, an unbraced twin tail and five gun turrets with bomb bays in the engine nacelles. Just before the outbreak of WWII, the Mariner was used for Neutrality Patrols; afterwards it became an important anti-submarine aircraft, sinking or taking part in the sinking of 10 U-Boats during the course of the war. IXO's 1:144 scale PBMs are uniquely constructed; most of the components are plastic, with only the fuselage made of diecast metal. This model is configured as a true flying boat, with fixed braced landing floats mounted to the wing-tips and attached beaching-gear fitted with equipment boxes. This model is ready for action with three gunner positions and large radar sitting just behind the bird-cage canopy.
