Boeing 747SP, seiral number 21024, first flew on 3 November 1975 as Boeing's fourth 747SP. It was delivered to Pan Am on 29 March 1976 as N532PA "Clipper Constitution". It was a 747SP-21 designed for ultra-long-range routes, including a notable Los Angeles–Tokyo non-stop flight. In 1986, Pan Am sold it to United Airlines, where it was initially painted with a plain white tail before receiving United's livery and re-registered as N142UA. The aircraft was stored by 1989 and scrapped around 1998, having logged approximately 79,412 flight hours and 10,590 cycles. N532PA remains remembered for its long-range performance and part in Pan Am's Pacific operations.
Known during development as the 747SB (short-body), the 747SP (special performance) was designed to meet a 1973 joint request from Pan American World Airways and Iran Air for a long-range, high-capacity airliner. The SP variant had a fuselage that was shortended by 47 feet while retaining the engines and fuel tank capacity, yeilding a higher speed and longer range than existing 747 variants. The 747SP first entered service with Pan Am in 1976 and in the years that followed, its record-setting range enabled Pan Am to offer the longest non-stop flights in the world, including New York - Tokyo, San Francisco - Hong Kong and Los Angeles - Sydney. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
