VFA-81 (Strike Fighter Squadron 81) the "Sunliners" was VF-81 until 4th February 1988 when they transitioned to the F/A-18C Hornet. The squadron deployed three times on the USS Saratoga between 1990 and 1994. On 17th January 1991 while flying from USS Saratoga during Operation Desert Storm F/A-18s from VFA-81 destroyed two Iraqi MiG-21s. The first USN victory of ODS came when Lt. Commander Mark Fox destroyed an Iraqi MiG-21 with a Sidewinder missile. In March 1991 VFA-81 returned to what was then their home NAS Cecil Field, Florida. Designed as a replacement for the A-4 Skyhawk and the A-7 Corsair II and as a complement to the F-14 Tomcat, the F/A-18 first flew on November 18, 1978. Perhaps best known as the aircraft of the US Navy's Blue Angels, this carrier-capable, supersonic, all-weather fighter has many roles, including fighter escort, fleet air defense and close air support. The F/A-18 is a versatile aircraft: it can operate from carriers or land bases and a single switch converts it from fighter to strike mode.
