Mikoyan MiG-29MU1 Fulcrum-C of the 114th Tactical Aviation Brigade, Ukrainian Air Force, is based at Ivano-Frankivsk in western Ukraine. The MU1 is Ukraine's own upgrade of the MiG-29, overhauled by the Lviv State Aviation Repair Plant, with radar detection range raised by 20 percent to about 100 kilometers in the front hemisphere, and the first aircraft to the 114th went there in June 2012. On February 26, 2022, a Russian missile strike on Ivano-Frankivsk airport destroyed six MiG-29s, and the brigade has continued flying in the war since. Designed to help the Soviet Union attain air superiority, the MiG-29 fighter was first flown on October 6th, 1977. The MiG-29, known as the "Fulcrum," has a high-mounted bubble canopy and twin jet engines with diagonal-shaped air intakes and large exhausts. Its tapered, swept-back wings and boom-mounted tail fins give it its classic look. Armed with medium and short-range missiles and unguided weapons for ground and sea-surface targets, the MiG-29's sight is a helmet-mounted system-the pilot chooses his targets by looking at them.
