Sukhoi Su-22M4 Fitter-K of the Soviet 274th Fighter-Bomber Aviation Regiment (APIB) shows the final production version of the variable-sweep Su-17 family, which first flew in prototype form in 1980. Its Klen-54 laser rangefinder and target designator gave it precision attack capability, and a heat exchanger intake at the base of the fin, installed to cool the avionics, gives the Su-17M4 its distinctive silhouette. Sources place a squadron of the type with the 274th at Kalinin, now Tver, around 1990, and the Soviet Air Force used it for tactical ground attack and nuclear strike.
Designed as a swing-wing fighter-bomber, the Su-17 first flew on August 2nd, 1966. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
