Sukhoi Su-34 "Fullback" of the Russian Aerospace Forces became the main tactical strike aircraft of Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, carrying out low-altitude attacks from the opening days. A twin-engine, two-seat fighter-bomber with the crew side by side in an armored titanium cockpit, it has a flattened "platypus" nose and Leninets radar. By October 2022, open sources had confirmed 16 combat losses, more than 10 percent of a fleet of roughly 130 to 140. The type was also involved in the October 17, 2022, Yeysk crash into an apartment building. Russia signed a deal for more Su-34s in August 2022.

Sukhoi Su-34 Fullback

Designed by the Soviet Union to challenge the superiority of fourth generation US fighters such as the F-15 Eagle, the Su-27 was first flown on May 20, 1977. This one seat Mach-2 fighter had the Soviet Union's first operational fly-by-wire system. The aircraft is very large compared to the MiG-29, its closest Soviet counterpart, but it is built with a high percentage of titanium, which helps minimize its weight. It is exceptionally agile and is perhaps most famous for its "Cobra" maneuver, which is a short, sustained level flight at a 120 degree angle of attack, often performed at air shows.

JC's 1:72 scale Su-34 is a large, heavy model made primarily of diecast metal, with plastic used only in those areas requiring the finest detail. Configurable components like weapons and extended/retracted landing gear attach with small magnets rather than press-fit plastic tabs and slots. Not only does this make configuration and reconfiguration easy, it reduces the risk of parts being damaged if the model is disturbed or mishandled once displayed.
