De Havilland Canada Dash 8-102, serial number 055, entered service with Ansett New Zealand as ZK-NEY. The aircraft operated regional routes across New Zealand linking smaller communities with major cities such as Auckland and Wellington. Configured with a single class passenger cabin, the Dash 8 offered reliable short haul performance and excellent capability on shorter runways. Powered by Pratt and Whitney Canada PW120 turboprop engines, the aircraft provided efficient and dependable service for regional operations. ZK-NEY supported Ansett New Zealand's domestic network before the airline ceased operations in 2001.
Designed as a short-haul transport based on the Dash 7 design, the Bombardier Dash 8 (formerly de Havilland Canada DHC-8) was first flown on June 20th, 1983. Appearing to be a smaller, twin-engined version of the Dash 7, the Dash 8 design placed less emphasis on STOL (Short take-off and landing) capability and focused more heavily on economical operation. The two Pratt & Whitney PW100 engines mated to a very high aspect ratio wing enabled the Dash 8 to offer the lowest cost per passenger mile of any regional airliner of it's era. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
