Scaled Composites WhiteKnightTwo   2.75"   5"

The Scaled Composites Model 339 SpaceShipTwo is an air-launched suborbital spaceplane type designed for space tourism. SpaceShipTwo is carried to its launch altitude by a Scaled Composites White Knight Two, before being released to fly on into the upper atmosphere powered by its rocket engine. It then glides back to Earth and performs a conventional runway landing. The Scaled Composites Model 348 White Knight Two is a quadjet cargo aircraft that is used to lift the SpaceShipTwo spacecraft to release altitude.

SpaceShipTwo, "VSS Enterprise" was first launched on October 10th, 2010 from the first White Knight Two aircraft, "VMS Eve". VSS Enterprise was destroyed on October 31st, 2014 when it broke up in flight and crashed.

Scaled Composites SpaceShipTwo

Designed as an air-launched, sub-orbital spacecraft, the SpaceShipTwo was first flown (unpowered) on October 10th, 2010. The spacecraft was developed from the experience gained with the much smaller SpaceShipOne design. The design allows for two pilots and six passengers. A typical spaceflight involves being air-dropped from a WhiteKnightTwo mothership at 50,000 ft before igniting its rocket motor and climbing to a sub-orbital altitude of approximately 350,000 ft at 2,600 mph. The rear wing sections then "feather" upwards to stabilize the craft as it descends back into the earth's atmosphere and then reconfigure once more at 80,000 for a gliding flight to landing.

Scaled Composites WhiteKnightTwo

Designed as a mothership to carry and launch the SpaceShipTwo spacecraft, the WhiteKnightTwo was first flown on December 21st, 2008. Under contract by Virgin Galactic, the aircraft was developed using experience gained from the much smaller WhiteKnightOne mothership that was previously built by Scaled Composites to carry the Space Ship One. The aircraft has a service ceiling of 60,000 ft and features a twin boom fuselage design that cleverly incorporates a complete replica of the spacecraft hull on one side, allowing for airborne crew training.
