Boeing 747-123, registered N9670, was the tenth Boeing 747-100 delivered to American Airlines, arriving on December 29, 1970, and marketed by the carrier as the "LuxuryLiner," featuring a distinctive lower-deck galley and an upper-deck "Captain's Deck First-Class Lounge" advertised for passengers wanting "to think and dream BIG." After 13 years of service connecting American's transcontinental and later transatlantic routes, including Dallas/Fort Worth to London Gatwick, N9670 was transferred to Pan American World Airways in 1984 as part of a fleet swap in which American received McDonnell Douglas DC-10s in exchange.
