USS Enterprise, a Yorktown-class aircraft carrier commissioned in 1938, became the most decorated American warship of the Second World War. She was at sea when Pearl Harbor was attacked and went on to fight in nearly every major Pacific battle, including Midway, Guadalcanal, the Philippine Sea, and Leyte Gulf. Nicknamed the "Big E," she survived repeated damage, and the Japanese wrongly reported her sunk several times.
For the U.S. Navy, 1942 was the year the "Big E" earned its legend. In February, Enterprise raided Japanese bases in the Marshall Islands, and in April she escorted USS Hornet on the Doolittle Raid against Tokyo. At Midway in June, her dive bombers helped sink three Japanese carriers, a turning point of the Pacific War. She was damaged at the Eastern Solomons in August and again at Santa Cruz in October. After Santa Cruz she was the only operational American carrier in the Pacific. Her aircraft then helped win the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in November.
The Yorktown class was a class of three aircraft carriers build shortly before World War II and commissioned into the US Navy between 1937 and 1941. They immediately followed Ranger, the first U.S. aircraft carrier built as such, and benefited in design from experience with Ranger and the earlier Lexington class, which were conversions into carriers of two battlecruisers.
