The A7V was Germany's only operational tank of the First World War. Just 20 were built, each a 30-ton steel box crewed by about 18 men and armed with a 57mm gun and six machine guns. Chassis No. 504, named "Schnuck," served with the German assault tank units during the 1918 offensives. On 31 August 1918, near Fremicourt, it was hit and abandoned during fighting against British and New Zealand forces, who captured it. Schnuck was shipped to Britain and displayed on Horse Guards Parade in London as a war trophy. It was later scrapped. Designed in response to the first British tanks that appeared on the Western front during WWI, the A7V entered service in 1917. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
