The A7V was Germany's only operational tank of the First World War. Just 20 were built, each a 30-ton steel box crewed by about 18 men and armed with a 57mm gun and six machine guns. Chassis No. 506, Mephisto is the only original A7V that survives today. It fought in the Second Battle of Villers-Bretonneux on 24 April 1918, the day of the first tank-versus-tank battle in history. During the attack it got stuck in a shell crater and its crew abandoned it. The tank sat in no man's land until July 1918, when Australian troops dragged it back to Allied lines as a trophy. It was shipped to Brisbane in 1919 and has been displayed at the Queensland Museum ever since, making it one of Australia's most treasured war relics.
Designed in response to the first British tanks that appeared on the Western front during WWI, the A7V entered service in 1917. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
