The SH-3G Sea King operated with Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 1, HC-1, aboard USS Hancock during the late 1960s and early 1970s. HC-1 detachments provided plane guard, search and rescue, vertical replenishment, and utility support for the carrier air wing during Western Pacific deployments. The SH-3G was configured primarily for logistics and rescue duties, with anti submarine equipment removed to increase cabin space and reliability. Operating from USS Hancock, SH-3G crews stood alert during flight operations and supported sustained carrier missions. The helicopter played a vital role in carrier safety and day to day fleet operations until the ship's decommissioning.

Sikorsky SH-3G Sea King

Designed to meet a US Navy requirement for an all-weather amphibious helicopter, the Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King first flew on March 11, 1959. Originally a submarine hunter-killer, the Sea King has since been used in a variety of operations, from search and rescue, executive transport and communications to anti-ship and airborne early warning. Its five main rotor blades and tail section fold for stowage aboard aircraft carriers, and its hull can remain temporarily watertight for water landings-a risky maneuver attempted only in emergencies. When deployed by aircraft carriers, Sea Kings serve as plane guard and are the first in the air and the last to return.
