The SH-3G Sea King served with Fleet Composite Squadron 1, VC-1, at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii, supporting US Navy Pacific Fleet operations. VC-1 operated the SH-3G primarily in search and rescue, utility transport, target support, and plane guard roles. The G model was optimized for logistics and rescue duties, with reduced anti submarine warfare equipment and increased cabin space. From Barbers Point, VC-1 Sea Kings provided safety coverage for fleet exercises, carrier operations, and missile tests across the Pacific. The SH-3G proved reliable and versatile, contributing significantly to aircrew safety and fleet readiness throughout its service with VC-1. Designed to meet a US Navy requirement for an all-weather amphibious helicopter, the Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King first flew on March 11, 1959. Originally a submarine hunter-killer, the Sea King has since been used in a variety of operations, from search and rescue, executive transport and communications to anti-ship and airborne early warning. Its five main rotor blades and tail section fold for stowage aboard aircraft carriers, and its hull can remain temporarily watertight for water landings-a risky maneuver attempted only in emergencies. When deployed by aircraft carriers, Sea Kings serve as plane guard and are the first in the air and the last to return. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
