The SH-3H Sea King operated with Helicopter Anti Submarine Squadron 4, HS-4, aboard the USS Carl Vinson during the 1980s. As part of Carrier Air Wing 14, HS-4 used the SH-3H for antisubmarine warfare, search and rescue, plane guard duty, and general fleet support. The H model's upgraded sonar, radar, and acoustic systems improved its ability to detect and track submarines during blue water operations. While deployed on Carl Vinson's early Western Pacific and Indian Ocean cruises, HS-4 conducted constant patrols, training flights, and readiness alerts, providing a vital ASW and rescue capability throughout the carrier's operational missions.
