On July 21, 1943, Jagdgruppe Süd der ObdL was formed as a high-altitude fighter unit to combat RAF Mosquito twin-engine reconnaissance aircraft. On August 15, 1943, the unit was redesignated JG 50. Major Graf was tasked with leading JG 50, a role he performed until the unit was disbanded in October 1943 and absorbed into I./JG 301. Graf was to claim three victories while serving with this unit, including two USAAF B-17 four-engine bombers shot down on September 6. Herman Graf is credited with 212 victories in over 830 missions. He recorded 202 victories over the Eastern Front. Of his ten victories recorded over the Western front, six were four-engine bombers.

MS-881482301591 DVD, German Fighter Aircraft of WW2 1942-1945

For the day fighters of the Luftwaffe, the dominant reality in the period 1943-1945 was the massive growth in the daylight bombing raids of Germany by the United States. While other theatres did have a call on the fighter wings, by far and away the bulk of German day fighters in this period were employed in the air defense of Germany. The core of the day fighter units continued to be built around later variants of the Bf 109 and the Fw-190, which were being continually modified and upgraded with new armament combinations and employing new tactics to force down the U.S. heavy bombers. The reality of the air-war over Germany is demonstrated in this program, illustrating the battles fought by the Luftwaffe day fighter squadrons in their attempts to frustrate ever growing U.S. and allied bomber raids.

Black & White, 54 Minutes.

Messerschmitt Bf 109G

Designed to meet a Luftwaffe need for a single-seat fighter/interceptor, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 was first flown on May 28th, 1935. Its all-metal construction, closed canopy and retractable gear made the Bf 109 one of the first true modern fighters of WWII. This versatile aircraft served in many roles and was the most produced aircraft of the war and the backbone of the Luftwaffe, and was flown by Germany's top three aces, who claimed a total of 928 victories between them. Armed with two cannons and two machine guns, the Bf 109's design underwent constant revisions, which allowed it to remain competitive until the end of the war.
