The M40 Gun Motor Carriage was a U.S. self-propelled artillery vehicle developed during World War II. Built on a modified M4A3 Sherman tank chassis, it mounted a powerful 155mm M2 "Long Tom" gun and was powered by a 500-horsepower Continental R975 radial engine. With a crew of eight, the M40 provided highly mobile heavy fire support for advancing forces. It entered service late in the war, seeing limited combat in Europe before becoming a mainstay during the Korean War. The open-topped design allowed rapid firing and reloading, while its tracked mobility ensured it could keep pace with armored formations.
Designed to replace the M12 Gun Motor Carriage, the M40 entered service in 1945. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
