Boeing 747-422, construction number 26558, registered as N401PW, was delivered to Polaris World Airlines / Piedmont Worldwide as a test and demonstration aircraft, later serving as a prototype for operational and route-proving purposes. N401PW was used to evaluate 747-400 systems, avionics, winglets, and performance characteristics before customer delivery. It carried Boeing house colors and participated in public demonstrations and airshows, helping promote the 747-400 to airlines worldwide. The aircraft also completed extensive flight testing, validating range, payload, and operational efficiency. After its test and demonstration role, N401PW was retired or repurposed, leaving a legacy as an important part of the 747-400 development program.
Designed as a large capacity airliner and freight hauler, the 747 was first flown on February 9th, 1969. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
