Boeing 747SP, serial number 21548, was delivered to Pan Am in 1978 as N538PA. It was sold to United Airlines in February 1986, re-registered N147UA, and flew long-range commercial routes, including the famous "Friendship One" charity round-the-world flight in 1988, setting a world record. The aircraft experienced notable incidents, including a fuel emergency and a firm crosswind landing in Sydney. Retired from service in 1995, N147UA was later acquired by the FAA for fuel-tank inerting and ground-based research. It is currently stored at Atlantic City, remaining a unique part of 747SP history and aviation testing.

Boeing 747SP

Known during development as the 747SB (short-body), the 747SP (special performance) was designed to meet a 1973 joint request from Pan American World Airways and Iran Air for a long-range, high-capacity airliner. The SP variant had a fuselage that was shortended by 47 feet while retaining the engines and fuel tank capacity, yeilding a higher speed and longer range than existing 747 variants. The 747SP first entered service with Pan Am in 1976 and in the years that followed, its record-setting range enabled Pan Am to offer the longest non-stop flights in the world, including New York - Tokyo, San Francisco - Hong Kong and Los Angeles - Sydney.
