Airbus A330-243, registered CS-TOP, flies for TAP Air Portugal configured for cargo operations, part of the Portuguese flag carrier's efforts to maximize revenue from its A330-200 fleet by carrying freight in the aircraft's belly hold alongside or instead of passenger service. TAP Air Portugal operates a limited number of A330-200s alongside its larger fleet of A330-900neo aircraft, which form the backbone of the carrier's long-haul operations connecting Lisbon to destinations across the Atlantic, Africa, and beyond. As part of TAP's flexible widebody fleet, CS-TOP supports the airline's cargo revenue diversification strategy.
Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers.
