Airbus A330-243, registered D-AXGB, flies for Eurowings Discover, the leisure-focused subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group established to operate long-haul vacation routes with a lower cost base than mainline Lufthansa. Wearing Eurowings Discover's distinctive livery, the aircraft supports the carrier's network connecting German cities to holiday destinations across Africa, the Caribbean, and other long-haul leisure markets. As part of Lufthansa Group's broader strategy of separating cost structures between premium long-haul flying and leisure travel, Eurowings Discover's A330-200 fleet plays a key role in serving price-sensitive vacation travelers from Germany.
Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers.
