Airbus A330-243, registered D-AIYB, flies for Condor as part of the German leisure carrier's fleet of A330-200s supporting long-haul routes to holiday destinations across the Caribbean, Indian Ocean, and other warm-weather markets popular with German travelers. As part of a small fleet of former Etihad Airways A330-200s that Condor leased to bridge capacity needs during its transition toward newer Airbus A330-900neo aircraft, D-AIYB reflects the carrier's strategy of using interim widebody leases to maintain its long-haul network while awaiting delivery of its next-generation fleet.
Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers.
