Airbus A330-243, registered D-AIYC, flies for Condor as part of the German leisure carrier's fleet of A330-200s supporting long-haul routes to holiday destinations popular with German vacationers. As part of a small fleet of former Etihad Airways A330-200s that Condor leased during a transitional period bridging the carrier toward its newer Airbus A330-900neo fleet, D-AIYC represents Condor's approach to maintaining long-haul widebody capacity while awaiting delivery of next-generation aircraft. Condor has built its identity around vacation travel, and this interim A330-200 fleet played a supporting role during the airline's broader fleet modernization.
Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers.
