Airbus A330-343, registered PK-GPD, flies for Garuda Indonesia wearing a cargo sticker applied during the COVID-19 pandemic, when passenger airlines worldwide converted portions of their widebody fleets to carry additional cargo in passenger cabins and holds to offset lost ticket revenue. As part of Garuda's substantial A330-300 fleet supporting the Indonesian flag carrier's domestic and regional international routes, PK-GPD reflects the pandemic-era adaptations airlines made to their aircraft and operations. Garuda Indonesia's A330 fleet forms a core part of the carrier's widebody operations connecting the Indonesian archipelago to destinations across Asia and Australia.
Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers.
