Boeing 777-222ER, registered N218UA, flies for United Airlines wearing the Star Alliance special livery, reflecting the carrier's founding membership in the global airline alliance since 1997. As part of United's substantial fleet of 777-200ERs, delivered between 1997 and 2002, the aircraft supports the carrier's long-haul international network connecting United's hubs to destinations across the Pacific, including flights to Auckland and other Oceania destinations. United's 777-200ER fleet has formed a core part of the airline's long-haul widebody operations for over two decades, complementing newer 777-300ER and 787 Dreamliner aircraft on the carrier's global route network.
Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to compete with the Airbus A330/A340 and the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, the 777 was first flown on June 12th, 1994. A pair of the world's largest diameter turbofan engines power the aircraft which currently holds the record for world's largest twin-engined airliner. The 777 was Boeing's first fly-by-wire airliner, featuring complete glass cockpit displays and flight envelope protection.
