Boeing 737 MAX 8, registered C-GJKK and named "#Swoopster," flew for Swoop, WestJet's Canadian ultra-low-cost airline subsidiary, as part of the carrier's fleet naming tradition applying distinctive hashtag-style nicknames across its aircraft. Swoop launched in 2018 offering fares roughly 40 percent below WestJet's standard pricing, later adding 737 MAX 8s to its original 737-800 fleet before the airline's October 2023 wind-down and full reintegration into parent company WestJet's mainline operations. As part of Swoop's growing narrowbody fleet, C-GJKK supported the carrier's budget domestic Canadian network during its final years of independent operation. The Boeing 737 MAX is an American narrow-body aircraft series being developed by Boeing Commercial Airplanes as the fourth generation of the Boeing 737, succeeding the Boeing 737 Next Generation. The first flight was on January 29, 2016. The 737 MAX is based on earlier 737 designs but re-engined with more efficient CFM International LEAP-1B along with aerodynamic improvements, most notably split-tip winglets, and airframe modifications.
