The Boeing 737 MAX 8 is the best-selling variant of Boeing's re-engined 737 family, featuring new CFM LEAP-1B engines, split-tip winglets, and other aerodynamic improvements delivering roughly 14 percent better fuel efficiency compared to the previous-generation 737-800. Entering service with Malindo Air in 2017, the MAX 8 program was grounded worldwide for nearly two years following two fatal crashes linked to the aircraft's MCAS flight control software, returning to service in late 2020 after extensive software and training changes. Major operators today include Southwest Airlines, the largest MAX 8 customer, alongside American Airlines, United Airlines, and numerous international carriers. The Boeing 737 MAX is an American narrow-body aircraft series being developed by Boeing Commercial Airplanes as the fourth generation of the Boeing 737, succeeding the Boeing 737 Next Generation. The first flight was on January 29, 2016. The 737 MAX is based on earlier 737 designs but re-engined with more efficient CFM International LEAP-1B along with aerodynamic improvements, most notably split-tip winglets, and airframe modifications.
