Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, registered N31022, flew for ATA Airlines, one of the largest L-1011 operators in aviation history with a combined fleet of 29 TriStars across both passenger and freighter variants. Indianapolis-based ATA Airlines built much of its charter and scheduled operations around the reliable, high-capacity trijet before the type's eventual retirement as more fuel-efficient twin-engine widebodies became available. As part of ATA's substantial TriStar fleet, N31022 supported the carrier's domestic and international charter operations, including U.S. military and government contract flights, reflecting the L-1011's versatility across both commercial and charter aviation roles.
Designed to meet an American Airlines requirement for a wide-bodied transport, the L-1011 was first flown on November 16th, 1970. The general layout and three-engined configuration is very similar to the McDonnell Douglas DC-10, with which the L-1011 was designed to compete. It was the first widebody airliner to receive FAA certification for zero-visibilty autolanding using an Inertial Navigation System based autopilot.
