In 1937, 3./StG 165 was based at Fuerstenfeldbruck, operating the Henschel Hs 123A-1, an early Luftwaffe dive bomber and close-support aircraft. The rugged, open-cockpit biplane, though simple in design, proved highly maneuverable and capable of operating from rough airstrips. At Fuerstenfeldbruck, the unit trained in dive-bombing and ground-attack tactics that would later be perfected with the Ju 87 Stuka. The Hs 123A-1 featured the early Luftwaffe camouflage scheme of RLM 61, 62, and 63 over light blue undersides. 3./StG 165's training missions in 1937 helped establish the foundations of the Luftwaffe's close air support doctrine used in early Blitzkrieg campaigns.
Designed as a dive-bomber and close-support aircraft, the Hs 123 was first flown on April 1st, 1935. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
