In 1945, Jagdgeschwader 400 operated the Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet from Brandis Air Base in Germany as the Luftwaffe's only operational rocket powered fighter unit. Designed to intercept high flying Allied bomber formations, the Me 163 achieved unprecedented speeds exceeding 590 mph, making it the fastest aircraft of World War Two. Armed with two 30 mm MK 108 cannon, the Komet attacked USAAF heavy bombers during brief but intense combat sorties. Although exceptionally fast, its limited endurance, hazardous rocket fuel, and difficult landing characteristics restricted its operational effectiveness during the final months of the war.
