Tupolev Tu-204-100, registered RA-64007, flew for Aeroflot as one of the Russian flag carrier's early Tu-204 aircraft, part of an initial effort to modernize the airline's fleet with the Soviet-designed successor to the Tupolev Tu-154 trijet during the 1990s. Aeroflot's Tu-204 fleet ultimately remained relatively small as the carrier increasingly turned to Western-built Airbus and Boeing aircraft for its core passenger operations in the post-Soviet era. As part of this early Tu-204 fleet, RA-64007 represented Russia's attempt to maintain a domestically produced alternative to Western narrowbody aircraft during a critical transitional period for Russian civil aviation.
