Airbus A320-214, registered N364VA, flew for Virgin America before the airline's 2018 merger into Alaska Airlines, after which the aircraft transitioned into Alaska's fleet wearing the combined carrier's livery. As part of Alaska Airlines' Airbus narrowbody fleet inherited from the Virgin America acquisition, the aircraft supported transcontinental and West Coast routes that Virgin America had pioneered with its distinctive mood lighting and premium economy product. Alaska Airlines eventually phased out its inherited Airbus fleet in favor of an all-Boeing 737 strategy, with N364VA representing this transitional period in Alaska's post-merger fleet consolidation.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
