Boeing 747-130, registered D-ABYC, flew for Lufthansa as part of the German flag carrier's early fleet of 747-100s, among the first generation of jumbo jets Lufthansa introduced to its long-haul network during the 1970s. Lufthansa was one of the earliest European operators of the 747, using the type to expand transatlantic and other intercontinental capacity during a period of rapid growth in international air travel. As part of this historic fleet, D-ABYC represented Lufthansa's pioneering adoption of widebody jet technology that would eventually evolve into the carrier's later 747-400 and 747-8 fleets.
