Airbus A320-211, registered C-FNVV, flew for Air Canada as part of the carrier's original fleet of A320s, among the earliest Airbus narrowbody aircraft introduced to Air Canada's domestic and short-haul international network. Air Canada has operated the A320 family for decades as a core narrowbody type, connecting Canadian cities to each other and to nearby U.S. destinations. As part of this historic fleet, C-FNVV represented an early chapter in Air Canada's long relationship with Airbus narrowbody aircraft, which has continued through subsequent generations including the A220 and A321.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
