Boeing 767-346(ER), registered JA8268, flew for Japan Airlines (JAL) as part of the carrier's substantial fleet of 767-300ERs supporting domestic Japanese routes and regional international connections across Asia. JAL operated one of the largest 767 fleets among Asian carriers for decades, using the type as a versatile widebody workhorse for both dense domestic trunk routes and shorter international services. As part of this historic fleet, JA8268 supported JAL's role as Japan's flag carrier before the type was gradually phased out in favor of newer 787 Dreamliners on many of its routes.
Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to fill the niche between the narrow-bodied 707 and wide-bodied 747, the 767 was first flown on September 26th, 1981. Developed in tandem with the narrow-bodied 757 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 767 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
