McDonnell Douglas MD-11, registered N802DE, flew for Delta Air Lines as part of the carrier's fleet of MD-11 trijets, acquired primarily through Delta's 1991 acquisition of Pan Am's remaining assets and routes. Delta operated the MD-11 on long-haul international routes including transatlantic and transpacific services before retiring the type in the early 2000s in favor of more fuel-efficient twin-engine widebodies. As part of this historic fleet, N802DE represented a transitional period in Delta's long-haul strategy, bridging the gap between the airline's earlier trijet fleet and its later Boeing 767, 777, and Airbus A330 operations.
