Boeing 737-8 MAX, registered VH-8IA, flies for Virgin Australia as part of the carrier's growing fleet of MAX 8 aircraft supporting domestic Australian routes and select international connections. Virgin Australia has incorporated the 737 MAX into its narrowbody fleet to improve fuel efficiency and reduce operating costs on routes connecting major Australian cities. As part of this modern narrowbody fleet, VH-8IA supports Virgin Australia's position as one of the country's two major full-service domestic carriers, competing directly with Qantas across the Australian aviation market. The Boeing 737 MAX is an American narrow-body aircraft series being developed by Boeing Commercial Airplanes as the fourth generation of the Boeing 737, succeeding the Boeing 737 Next Generation. The first flight was on January 29, 2016. The 737 MAX is based on earlier 737 designs but re-engined with more efficient CFM International LEAP-1B along with aerodynamic improvements, most notably split-tip winglets, and airframe modifications.
