Ilyushin Il-96-300, registered CCCP-96000, was one of Aeroflot's original fleet of Russian-built widebody quadjets, introduced starting December 29, 1992, to enable nonstop flights between Moscow and distant destinations including Havana and San Francisco that the older Il-62 could not reach without refueling stops. Aeroflot operated seven Il-96-300s delivered between 1992 and 1994, with the type also forming the basis of Russia's presidential aircraft fleet under the Il-96-300PU VIP designation. As part of this historic fleet, CCCP-96000 represented Russia's post-Soviet effort to maintain a domestically produced widebody alternative to Western aircraft for its flag carrier's long-haul network.
