Boeing 737-8 MAX, registered YI-ASX, flies for Iraqi Airways as part of the Iraqi flag carrier's growing fleet of MAX 8 aircraft, delivered as part of an ambitious fleet modernization program that has also brought new Boeing 787 Dreamliners and Airbus A220 aircraft to the airline. Iraqi Airways took delivery of its first 737 MAX 8 in March 2023, with additional MAX 8s and MAX 10s on order as the carrier rebuilds its fleet to meet growing domestic and international demand amid Iraq's projected economic growth. As part of this modern fleet, YI-ASX supports Iraqi Airways' renewal strategy. The Boeing 737 MAX is an American narrow-body aircraft series being developed by Boeing Commercial Airplanes as the fourth generation of the Boeing 737, succeeding the Boeing 737 Next Generation. The first flight was on January 29, 2016. The 737 MAX is based on earlier 737 designs but re-engined with more efficient CFM International LEAP-1B along with aerodynamic improvements, most notably split-tip winglets, and airframe modifications.
