Airbus A320-214, registered EC-NNY, flies for Volotea, the Spanish low-cost carrier specializing in connecting secondary European cities that larger airlines often overlook. As part of Volotea's fleet of A320s supporting the carrier's point-to-point network across Spain, France, Italy, and other European countries, the aircraft reflects Volotea's niche strategy of serving underserved regional routes rather than competing directly on major trunk routes dominated by larger low-cost carriers. As part of this fleet, EC-NNY supports Volotea's role providing essential connectivity between smaller European cities that might otherwise lack direct air links.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives. More than 4,500 of the A320 family have been produced, almost all of which are still in active service. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
