Airbus A320-232, registered HL7737, flies for Asiana Airlines as part of the South Korean carrier's fleet of A320s supporting domestic Korean routes and short-haul regional international connections across Northeast Asia. Asiana has operated a substantial Airbus narrowbody fleet including A320s and A321s to complement its long-haul 777 and A350 operations. As part of this fleet, HL7737 supports Asiana's role as a Star Alliance member now majority owned by Korean Air, providing essential narrowbody capacity for the airline's regional network from Seoul.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
