Airbus A330-941, registered OO-ABG, was the first Airbus A330-900neo delivered to Air Belgium, joining the fleet in 2021 to replace the carrier's aging ex-Finnair A340-300s on long-haul routes connecting Brussels to destinations including Mauritius. Air Belgium's ambitious passenger operations ultimately proved financially unsustainable, and the airline went bankrupt in April 2025 before being acquired by French shipping conglomerate CMA CGM, which has continued operating Air Belgium as a dedicated cargo brand. As part of this transitional fleet, OO-ABG represented Air Belgium's brief but notable venture into modern widebody passenger service.
Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers.
