Airbus A320-251N, registered PR-YRS, flies for Azul Brazilian Airlines as part of the carrier's fleet of A320neo aircraft supporting domestic Brazilian routes. Azul has built one of Brazil's largest airline fleets combining Embraer regional jets with Airbus narrowbody aircraft, using the A320neo family for higher-capacity domestic trunk routes connecting major Brazilian cities. As part of this fleet, PR-YRS supports Azul's role as one of Brazil's three major domestic carriers, providing efficient narrowbody capacity across South America's largest domestic aviation market.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
