Boeing 777-2H6ER, registered 9M-MRD, serial number 28411, was delivered to Malaysia Airlines on July 30, 1997, entering service as one of the carrier's early 777 flagships and accumulating more than 76,000 flight hours over a 17-year career flying long-haul routes linking Kuala Lumpur with hubs across Europe, Australia, and Asia. Between 2005 and 2008 the aircraft wore a special tropical-flower-themed livery called Heliconia, or Freedom of Space, alongside Malaysia Airlines' standard kite scheme. On July 17, 2014, while operating flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, the aircraft was shot down over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board.

Boeing 777-200ER

Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to compete with the Airbus A330/A340 and the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, the 777 was first flown on June 12th, 1994. A pair of the world's largest diameter turbofan engines power the aircraft which currently holds the record for world's largest twin-engined airliner. The 777 was Boeing's first fly-by-wire airliner, featuring complete glass cockpit displays and flight envelope protection. Standard varients have a range of 4,200 nautical miles while Extended Range (ER) variants can fly for 6,600 nautical miles and the Longer Range (LR) variant is the world's longest range airliner capable of flying 7,800 nautical miles.
