Boeing 777-368(ER), registered HZ-AK42, flies for Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) as part of the flag carrier's substantial fleet of 777-300ERs supporting long-haul international routes from Jeddah and Riyadh. Saudia operates one of the larger 777-300ER fleets in the Middle East, using the type's high capacity to serve routes connecting Saudi Arabia to Europe, Asia, and North America, as well as supporting the carrier's role transporting millions of pilgrims for Hajj and Umrah each year. As part of this fleet, HZ-AK42 supports Saudia's position as one of the region's major long-haul carriers.
Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to compete with the Airbus A330/A340 and the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, the 777 was first flown on June 12th, 1994. A pair of the world's largest diameter turbofan engines power the aircraft which currently holds the record for world's largest twin-engined airliner. The 777 was Boeing's first fly-by-wire airliner, featuring complete glass cockpit displays and flight envelope protection.
